When a patient first comes to see an Occupational Therapist, an evaluation session will be conducted. Depending on the practice of the center, some would conduct the evaluation session using standardized assessment tools, whilst others will observe the overall skill (cognitive, physical, sensory, emotional, social) performed by the patient.
This session helps the OT to form a base line of skill abilities and challenges before treatment is implemented, and understands the child in their natural state of response and behaviour, especially when their parents are around. The session gives a short overview of how the dynamics of the family is.
The purpose of the first session is also to explain to parents what OT is about, what their child is in for, what to expect from therapy and what is expected from them. This session is to help everyone to start therapy, being on the same page of mindset and goals.
